Spotlight on our Inspirational LGBTQIA+ leaders – Julien Haye

At Broadgate, part of Trinnovo Group, we have been shining a spotlight on the inspirational LGBTQIA+ leaders in our community, highlighting their thoughts on the importance of Pride, what it means to them and how we can do more to empower this community in the workplace.

We have been sharing some of their impactful answers on our social channels throughout June, but want to take the message beyond simply highlighting the importance of Pride, but also share the stories and sharing the insights of our network of inspirational leaders, enabling our community to learn how we can do more to act as allies and advocates for our LGBTQIA+ community.

Julien Haye joined Fidelity International (FIL) in July 2017 as Global Head of Non-Financial Risk in London and has over twenty-three years’ experience in the financial industry. In his current role, Julien partners with FIL’s top management and Board, leveraging risk insights to improve the firm’s operating model resiliency and scalability, and product offering through effective risk management and culture, and to continuously improve the firm’s client outcome and journey.

Julien is passionate about people, art and design. For many years he has led the LGBT diversity and inclusion agenda at the firms he worked for, mentoring young professionals and entrepreneurs to help them to reach their potential and supporting non-profit organisations. He worked closely with senior management and the HR team to nurture FIL’s inclusive and diverse culture; as a result, FIL was the first asset managers to reach the UK top 100 inclusive workplace. Having worked in less inclusive environments Julien recognises the importance of promoting the benefits of a diverse workforce therefore creating an environment where everyone can be themselves and to be a role model for LGBT colleagues.

What does Pride mean to you?

Equality, Freedom, and ability to be ourselves

What makes you feel empowered in the workplace?

Trust and self-confidence. Having worked in less inclusive environments I recognise the importance of promoting the benefits of a diverse workforce therefore creating an environment where everyone can be themselves and to be a role model for LGBT colleagues.

How can colleagues be allies in the workplace?

I always ask “Why do they want to help?”. The ‘Why’ is their centre, their motivator, the reason why they should speak up and raise to the occasion. So to be an effective and engaged ally, find your “Why” and let it guide you.

What can businesses do to empower the LGBTQIA+ community?

Acknowledge their differences and enable them to be part of the story

Advice to your younger self

Be curious and don’t be afraid to be who you are, however scary that might be

At Trinnovo Group as part of our Pride campaign, we are raising money for Transgender Equality Network Ireland (TENI), a non-profit member-driven organisation that was founded in 2006. TENI has a vision for a world where all people, regardless of gender identity or expression, enjoy full acceptance, equality, and human rights.
