It’s both scary and exciting when you are about to move your entire life to a new city. How do you prepare for the unknown? Whether you travel 100 miles or 100,000 miles, living anywhere away from home is going to be unnerving at first (especially when you are used to home comforts).

Having completed my Business and Marketing degree at the National College of Ireland, I quickly moved over to London in January 2019 to kickstart my career with Broadgate Search (part of the Trinnovo group). After living in Ireland for my entire life, I felt it was time for change. Hearing and seeing my friends’ experiences of living in London definitely gave me the push I needed to pack my bags and go. London was calling me!

You have to really consider the good, the bad and the damn right ugly. I would suggest taking the following into consideration:

  • Emotional attachment to your home
  • Meeting new people
  • Cost of living
  • Cultural differences

As expected, the move at first was nerve-wracking. The constant worry about meeting new people, trying to make friends and it also being my first full-time job. I didn’t know what to expect from the British culture. This was a whole new world to me – as much as I had tried to prepare myself, I was still unsure about what I was really getting myself into. It took me some time to get my head around things but once I had settled into my new home and my new job I had realised I had made the best decision to kick start my career.

The best advice I can give for overcoming these worries is to surround yourself with great people – they gave me the support and courage I needed. Try not to overthink things that are out of your control and try and make sure that you are as prepared as possible to ensure you can get past the uncertainty and unfamiliarity that a new location can bring.

It is crazy how much I’ve learnt over the past eleven months here at Broadgate Search, and I am still learning every day. London is not overrated, when people say it is the best city they are certainly on to something. There are endless things to do, see and experience and I’ve only witnessed a fraction of what London has to offer.

The move to London has been an incredible experience, it has helped me to grow as a person and push myself in the right direction of my career, whilst opening so many opportunities. So if re-locating for work is something you’re debating, just do it! I promise you it’ll be a life-changing experience you won’t regret.

But remember, for those who are relocating to a new city take advantage of any and all opportunities. The world is your oyster! If you are or know of anyone struggling with a relocation (for work or personal life), please do not hesitate to contact me directly on:
